How to enjoy the wonderful wine of Santorini

By Journey to Greece on September 12, 2016

The Greek island of Santorini has been famous for its wine production since ancient times. According to Greek Mythology, the god of wine, Dionysus, is said to have brought the art of winemaking to this picturesque island. Greeks and Romans were very fond of its wines, and in later times the Venetians loved them just as much.

The warm, sunny climate is ideally suited to the famous “Assyrtiko” grape and other local varieties. The majority of modern wine production is devoted to dry, white wines. However, some red grapes and sweeter varieties, such as the Vinsanto, are also produced. This means that visitors to the island always have a fine selection of Santorinian wine to choose from.

Vedema Resort takes its name from the word for “harvest”. In Santorini this means mainly the season of wine-making. This word has very happy connotations of singing and laughter. It recalls all the good times that local people enjoyed when the grapes were finally pressed, and the workers could rejoiced at the end of another busy year’s work. The precious liquid was traditionally stored in special cellars below the ground. Today these ancient wine cellars provide a stunning location for romantic restaurants and wine bars, with their vaulted ceilings and rustic stone walls. Visitors can still enjoy their celebratory atmosphere and enjoy traditional wines from all over Santorini.

The term “Canava” refers to a set of large, airy rooms that were formerly used for wine pressing and other agricultural activities. Their unique dimensions provide a unique atmosphere to sample some excellent food and wine. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy wine tasting at Canava Wine Bar of Vedema Resort.
