A marathon led by Dean Karnazes, raising awareness on childhood obesity and the benefits of the Mediterranean diet
The aim of Navarino Challenge is to be established as an annual Marathon, with the contribution of Dean Karnazes
Messinia and Arcadia, two Greek regions in the Peloponnese with a rich cultural heritage, will be hosting the “Navarino Challenge” marathon from 18th to 20th October 2013, under the Auspices of the General Secretariat of Sports (Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports), led by the Greek-American ultra-marathon runner Dean Karnazes, who will run for the first time in Greece.
This is the first marathon which aims to raise awareness on the issue of childhood obesity and the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
Runners of all ages will have the opportunity to learn about these causes and take part in the race to support them.
The choice of the Peloponnese is of foremost importance, as due to its biodiversity and traditions, it is a key ambassador for the healthy Mediterranean diet.
The “Navarino Challenge” marathon will be held on three different routes – with Dean Karnazes participating in all of them, and taking place on three consecutive days:
Route 1 – Silimna – Tripoli (distance: 5 km)
Route 2 – Ancient Messini – Kalamata Airport (distance: 21.1 km – Half marathon)
Route 3 – Pylos – Costa Navarino (distance: 15 km)
The starting point of “Navarino Challenge” will be Silimna, Arcadia, the birthplace of Dean Karnazes’ family, while the last route of the Marathon will end at the prime Mediterranean destination Costa Navarino.
